Look for shapes in familiar places

A plate may look like a circle, a book like a rectangle and a window like a square. Point to one example and name its shape. Then invite your child to find another. Real objects help them see that shapes are around them, not only on a worksheet.

Talk about what you see

Trace a shape with a finger and describe it in simple words: “This circle is round,” or “This triangle has three sides.” Some objects are not perfect examples, so choose clear ones at first. Rotate a square card to show that it remains a square when its position changes.

Make a small game

Sort blocks by shape, build a picture from cut out shapes or find shapes during a walk. If your child calls a rectangle a square, compare the two together rather than turning the moment into a quiz.

Connect cards to play

If you introduce a shape with a flash card, search for a matching object nearby. A short card session followed by hands on discovery makes the idea easier to discuss together.
