Notice specific moments
Progress can look like pointing to a familiar picture, trying a new word, using a word in conversation or asking a question. Say what you noticed: “You remembered the butterfly we saw yesterday.” This is more meaningful than a general demand to get everything right.
Share the moment
Tell another family member about a word your child enjoyed, revisit a favourite story or draw something you explored together. You can keep a simple note of topics they like, without turning home learning into a scorecard.
Allow for uneven days
Children do not respond the same way every time. A quiet day does not erase earlier interest. Keep offering short, enjoyable opportunities, and adjust to mood and energy.
Celebrate connection too
A good session may end with a conversation about one card. CDE Flash Card can make topics easy to revisit, while you decide what feels worth noticing and sharing with your child.
