Start with familiar words
Pick a small topic your child already meets in daily life, such as food, animals or things at home. Familiar objects give you something real to point to after the session. Choose a calm time and sit where you can both see the cards.
Show, name and connect
Show one card, say the word clearly and give your child time to look. You could add a short phrase: “Apple. This is a red apple.” Then point out an apple at snack time. If your child asks a question or makes a sound, respond naturally instead of rushing to the next card.
Repeat without turning it into a test
Bring back a few favourite words on another day and add new ones gradually. Your child does not need to identify every picture correctly. If they choose to say a word, acknowledge the effort. If they only listen, you can still enjoy the activity together.
Make it workable for your family
Keep the first sessions brief and stop when interest fades. CDE Flash Card can help you choose organised digital topics without preparing stacks of cards, while you remain part of the learning conversation.
